Horticulture is the industry and science of plant cultivation. Horticulturists work and conduct research in the disciplines of plant propagation and cultivation, crop production, plant breeding and genetic engineering, plant biochemistry, and plant physiology. The work particularly involves fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf. Horticulturists work to improve crop yield, quality, nutritional value, and resistance to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses.
Horticulture is essentially the science or art of growing plants. Horticulturalists spend their time growing vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants, or flowers. There are five main areas of study under horticulture, they are; floriculture, landscape horticulture, olericulture, pomology, and postharvest physiology. Growing healthy plants can be very difficult, there are many factors involved such as; determining the proper soil conditions for optimum growth, determining the optimum pH level, determining which nutrients a plant is lacking, determining ways to maximize production, and much more.
