The Holocene is the current geological epoch – it began about 11,700 years ago. It is a part of the Quaternary period, and is identified as a warm stage in between glacial periods. Human existance is basically contained within the Holocene epoch.

Ice melt in the early part of the epoch caused sea levels to rise. Since then the climate has been fairly stable.
