What is the ‘hockey stick temperature reconstruction’ concept?

The “hockey stick” reconstruction concept refers to a graph made by Dr. Michael Mann in 1999.  The graph represents recordings of tree rings to show climate trends for the past 1000 years.  The graph itself actually looks like a hockey stick, with the first 900 years being fairly straight and the last 100 years skyrocketing up.  This graph completely changed the view of the scientific community about climate patterns.
