A typical pH scale measures between 0-14. However, because pH is calculated from an equation, acids and bases below 0 and above 14 are possible. The lowest pH ever recorded was -3.6 and resulted from mining tailings.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. 7 is neutral and anything less than 7 is considered acidic. Materials with a pH above 7 are considered basic. Each whole pH value below 7 is ten times more acidic than the next higher value.
