The altitude at which the environment becomes inhospitable to vegetation is called the tree-line. The altitude of the tree-line can vary depending on the climate. For example, in the Rocky Mountains the tree-line is 11,500 feet. In the Alps the tree-line is only 2600 feet. Trees growing near the tree-line are often stunted and unhealthy. These are called krummholz trees (German for twisted wood).
