What is the highest altitude at which people can still breathe?

Most ordinary people can breathe at altitudes of 8,000 feet with little ill-effects. Above that height, altitude sickness begins to set in. Well-trained mountaineers can breathe comfortably at much greater heights. Several climbers have claimed to be able to breathe on top of Mount Everest without the aid of oxygen (29,000 feet).
