“The highest altitude obtained in a piston-driven propeller aeroplane (without a payload) was 17,083 m (56,047 ft)”

There are different regulations to stipulate the maximum altitude a plane can fly.

The highest an airplane has ever gotten was 85,135 feet. That is an absurd hight however, as most military planes can get up to 50,000 feet, while most commercial planes stick around 30-45,000 feet in altitude.
