Hemp is made from the fibers or seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant, a similar plant to flax. Hemp fibers can be used to make paper, textiles, and rope. Hemp seed oil comes from the seed of the same plant. This seed oil can be used in body products, such as lotion. The seeds themselves can be added to food as a powder for flavoring and/or protein.
Like buggirl said, hemp comes from cannabis sativa. The flowering tops of cannabis sativa is used for marijuana, a fact that has caused cannabis sativa, and hemp by extension, to have been illegal in the United States since the 1950’s. There is a movement among some to legalize hemp because of several properties such as the strength of hemp fiber, the potential of hemp to make environmentally friendly vehicles, and the number of products that can be made from hemp.
