You are probably referring to a geothermal heat pump, which is a heating and cooling system that uses the earth as a heat source in the winter (drawing heat from the ground and depositing it in your home) and as a heat sink in the summer (drawing heat from your home and depositing it in the Earth). There are also non-geothermal heat pumps, which move heat from one place to another to create cool air, usually used in appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators.
