What have the studies of the oil spill told us about the way marine life is affected?

Each type of marine life is impacted differently by oil spills. First, the oil would basically suffocate many plants and animals. Next, since many of the compounds in oil spills are toxic and bioaccumulative, some of the marine life may absorb or ingest these compounds, which would lead to serious health effects and even birth defects, further harming future generations.
