In some cases, environmental volunteers are putting themselves in danger because they might be working in areas that are polluted or contaminated. Their safety should always come first, because there are other ways of dealing with environmental damage if professionals are brought in to take care of the area.
This question also makes me think of a different kind of situation. Sometimes whales get beached and people become so emotional and attached to the animal that they spend enormous amounts of time and money to help this one living thing. The volunteers in this case might be wasting resources that could be put to better use for other things that have better chances of producing results.
