What rivers have been shortened because of upstream use?

Increasing freshwater demands throughout the globe have caused many of the world’s major rivers to dry up. Many of these rivers are depleted of water upstream before running to the ocean, resulting in the shortening you suggested. The rivers’ waters are usually fed by spring runoff and precipitation. Almost all of this water is allocated by the communities upstream, reducing flow size as the river makes its way down to the sea. The Colorado River, Yellow River, Nile, and Ganges all frequently run completely dry before reaching the ocean.
