A drop from 22 million plastic bag used to 3 million plastic bags used.  Not as much going into landfill.

According to city officials, the tax generated $150,000 for river cleanup during the January 2010, the tax’s first month of implementation.  In addition, the number of bags given out in that month was only 3 million, down from 22.5 million, the monthly average of 2009.  Beyond these measurable effects, supporters of the tax have argued that it brings attention to the bags as a contributor to environmental degradation.
