Landfills don’t help the environment except by isolating waste to a certain area. Landfills, or rubbish dumps, are where we throw all the household and hazardous waste accumulated every day through human action. Once a landfill gets large enough, the waste is buried. This waste takes forever to decompose, even if it contains large amount of organic matter, because the garbage is packed so tightly, that the environment is too anaerobic for organc matter to decay properly. Landfills are also a source of gas emissions, such as methane, which contribute to environmental pollution and climate change.
