At the moment, producing hydrogen as it would need to be produced for hydrogen cars is an energy-intensive process that makes the wonderful, environmentally-friendly components of hydrogen energy not so environmentally friendly. In fact, in its current state, hydrogen would be responsible for more greenhouse gases than gasoline. Hydrolysis, which is the process of taking water and splitting hydrogen from oxygen, is what requires the energy. One solution, though, is to power hydrolysis with solar energy. One company called SunHydro plans to build 11 such stations along I-95 on the East Coast.
