What is the hardest part with a college becoming sustainable?

Nothing is really easy about sustainability. Reducing energy consumption amid the same population of students and faculty (or even increasing population) requires discipline and money up front. Installing energy efficient retrofits can be problematic in aging buildings. Renewable energy is also currently more expensive to buy than coal from the grid. I’d say the hardest part is simply to convince the administrators to fully go on board. Sustainability these days doesn’t come cheap, and money doesn’t grow on trees, especially for colleges.
