Rating which mountains are the hardest to climb in the world is ultimately a matter of opinion. But consensus among experienced climbers suggests that K2 is the hardest mountain to climb in the world. It is the second highest mountain and also located in the Himalayas. Even though it isn’t as high as Everest, its slopes are steeper and more difficult to traverse.
Mountaineers consider K2, on the Pakistan / Xinjiang, China border, the most difficult to climb. K2 is the second largest mountain in the world, but routes are steeper and weather conditions colder than other mountains. K2 is known as “The Savage Mountain,” because of its status as the most fatal mountain to climb. The first ascent was achieved in 1954 by Italians, Lingo Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni. As of 2010 only 302 climbers have achieved the ascent of K2.
