Wood for flooring is judged by Janka hardness scale. The hardness is expressed numerically as the pounds per square inch of pressure required to sink a .444 inch steel ball into the species of hardwood where the higher the number, the harder the hardwood. Brazilian Walnut (also called Ipe or Lapacho)is ranked the hardest at 3680. The softest is ceder at 900.
