While iron is a necessary mineral for proper health, too much can be toxic. Excess iron in the bloodstream is called unbound, or free, iron. This iron can build up over the years and may accelerate other health problems including cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and osteoporosis. It may also aggrivate inflammation.
People who are at most risk for iron overload are older men and women who are postmenopausal.
