What happens to surgery tools in hospitals once they are used?

Surgical instruments are generally too expensive to just throw away after one use in an operating room.  Sterilization standards are high enough, and the methods are efficient enough that tools can be used again and again.  All surgical instruments are decontaminated and sterilized after use or contamination.
