What happens to the sand at the beaches once the oil reaches it?

When oil gets to the beach, it stains the sand, becoming very hard to extract. Fortunately, BP is unveiling a machine called a Sand Shark that rolls along sucking up sand, which it filters through a series of screens until clean sand (theoretically tumbles out the back, the oil having been removed. Only time will tell to see if it’ll be effective.
