They decompose! As the article in the citation says, “Researchers in Washington state have found that salmon provide food for at least 137 species of microbes, stream invertebrates, mammals and birds.” That is a pretty major contribution! In general, salmon break down and provide nutrients to other animals, which is in line with the principles of the food chain.
