Secondhand electronics are often sent to developing countries for people to use. However there often is no recycling or e-waste recycling infrastructure in these countries, so these electronics build up in landfills. Many electronics contain toxic substances and heavy metals (like mercury and lead) that can leach out in landfills. Therefore it is very important that you properly recycle your electronics in the U.S. so it doesn’t turn into dangerous waste in the third world.
