What happens to old cell phones?

130,000,000 a year are thrown away in the US alone (and that was 2005 according to the cited reference). Elsewhere I have read that discarded cell phones world wide include 2000 tons of copper, 46 tons of silver, and 4 tons of gold – all in landfills and trash piles.

Oddly enough, most people keep them in their drawers at home. I am actually guilty of this, and then I started realizing how a whole economy is springing up with places that will pay you to send them in and they recycle your old phone for you. Look for a school nearby that may be fundraising by collecting old cell phones for recycling.
