What happens to the male chicks in egg production plants?

Beware: the post is not for the weak-stomached.  Egg production facilities are run like any other business and they don’t keep extra product that isn’t profitable, and that happens to be male chicks.  Male chicks cannot produce eggs and take too long to grow to large enough to be used raised for meat.  According to a recent article that came out in the Huffington Post, it is common practice to ‘euthanize’ these males chicks, and by euthanize they mean put them onto a conveyor belt that sends them into a grinder.  The article documents one specific egg hatchery in Iowa, but the hatchery’s techniques are common throughout the industry.  Roughly 200 million male chicks ‘disposed of’ in similar manners each year within the egg industry.
