What happens if a landfill starts to leak?

Potential contamination of groundwater, and pollution of the ground happens if a landfill starts to leak. Many landfills are watched and maintained for years after they are shut down, to make sure leaks do not occur. If a leak does occur, it is usually cleaned up as long as the leak is found. Landfills use layers and layers of thick material to protect the land itself from the decomposing trash, and methane can be harvested from the decomposition.
