What happens if plants don’t get enough nitrogen?

Nitrogen is one of the essential nutrients which all plants need to thrive. Plants need to have a source of nitrogen in the soil in order to build proteins and nucleic acids properly. Signs of nitrogen efficiency include yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and a tendency to wilt easily. If plants are showing these symptoms, it’s a good idea to add nitrogen to the soil. Regular compost and other forms of decayed plant material are good, organic sources of nitrogen.
