In the wolf pack, wolves decide their rank within the pack based on personality (whoever has the strongest, smartest personality is usually the winner in fights, but strength is also a necessity). The alpha is the primary wolf in the pack, followed by the beta, and lastly the omega. In the event that an alpha is killed during a fight, the wolf who won the fight then becomes the alpha. If it dies of naturally causes or is killed by another animal, ritual fights occur (usually without serious harm) to decide who the next alpha is, or the beta takes the role as alpha.
