Human waste from residences, businesses and factories, is conveyed through the sewer system to treatment plants where it is made into a form that will not be too disruptive to the environment. Once it has been sufficiently treated, it is typically discharged into rivers or the sea.
Waste travels from toilet to treatment plant where it is liquidized. Solids are removed by a coarse filter and put in a large pond to settle. The semi clean water is drained off and sprayed over a filtration medium like gravel or stone chips, and bacteria dine on the excrement’s organic particles. The very near clean water is drained off into the environment. The sludge that remains is used for agricultural fertilizer or burnt as a fuel substitute.
