First, I think it’s important to define who climate refugees are. Climate refugees are people who have been displaced due to environmental disasters, whether they be floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, or any type of natural disaster that is exacerbated by the effects of global warming. Any number of things could happen to climate refugees, but a lot of times they tend to stay close to the area where the disaster occurred; mostly because they lose everything they have, therefore limiting their ability to move on. According to Red Cross research, the number of climate refugees are more than those displaced by war, and as the world warms, this figure is expected to grow. The United Nations came under fire recently for wildly miscalculating the number and location of climate refugees around the world – this would not have been so bad if they hadn’t tried to cover this up, and then deny it but nevertheless, they did. The U.N. had tried to take down the website showing the glaring misinformation, but it can still be accessed through a cached file of the webpage on Google.com. There is an interesting documentary you can watch as well, if you are interested called Climate Refugees – it has gotten many rave reviews so it seems well worth watching.
