Interesting question. It depends on the individual bird and the bird species. Guinea hens, for example, are monogomous birds, and I have some here on my farm to help control insect population. One time, when one of the birds died, its mate laid down on top of where we had burried the other bird, and the next morning we found him dead. Some ornathologist believe a similar mourning process occurs in Canadian geese.
