What happens to an animal when it hibernates?

Some animals slow down or suspend much of their daily functions during hibernation. Their breathing and heart rates slow and they allow their body temperature to drop, in some cases even below freezing. They stop eating and in many cases stop excreting. Animals do all of this during hibernation to conserve and use less energy.
