Usually old vehicles are scrapped for usable parts before being sent to the landfills. In cars, most of the metal in the body is recycled, along with the tire rubber sometimes as well. Anything that’s salvagable tends to have utility left to it, so is worth some amount of money. If there’s money in it, somebody’s doing it. In the case of auto recycling, there’s a lot of people doing it–it’s the 16th largest industry in the US.
