What happens to all the fishing line that gets broken off in lakes and the oceans?

Depending on what the fishing line is made of, it can either dissolve and disappear over time (some biodegradable fishing lines are available) or it can impact marine life as well as the vessels and equipment people use at or below the water’s surface. For example, fishing line can get caught on boat propellers and cause serious damage, including the expulsion of additional debris and chemicals into the water. Because it is thin and clear, fishing line is also not visible under water and therefore can harm sea life that is passing by at relatively considerable speeds.
