it has been known for many decades that the universe is expanding. Edwin Hubble made this discovery in 1929 when he noticed that every part of the universe he observed was moving away from us. The celestial bodies closer to him were moving at a slower rate, but those further were moving much faster – thus suggesting that the universe is expanding. This is backed up today by some very complicated physics.
Although it was contested for many years, it is now realized that our universe is expanding. We can tell based on the relative distances of galaxies to know they are moving away from us. In the long run, it is likely the universe will keep expanding until such great distances prevent white dwarfs from reigniting into stars. After that, the majority of the universe will be cold and dead. Sort of depressing, isn’t it?
