Goose Lake, a glacier lake, has had a history of completely drying up over the last 150 years. However, recently due to water diversion practices, Goose lake’s average water levels has subsided dramatically. This drop in water levels has affected other water systems as well. Goose Lake use to be the source of the Pit River which fed into the Sacramento River. Also, Salinity levels has risen greatly in the Lake over the past 15 years which greatly threatens the local fish population.
Its interesting how we divert the water from a given area then ask ourselves what happened to all the water.
Goose Lake is not really a glacial lake in the sense of a glacier carving its basin; it is a pluvial lake, meaning that the significant rains associated with glacial periods filled the basin.
