The Colorado river has been depositing silt and soil into the Sea of Cortez for ages. A natural dam separates the northern part of the sea from the open waters to the south. The dam has been continually reinforced by new material delivered by a river delta. What used to be a freshwater lake on that basin has dried and become the Imperial Valley, an area of rich soil on the north slope.
