What happened to all the dirt that was taken from the grand canyon by the colorado river?

The Colorado river has been depositing silt and soil into the Sea of Cortez for ages. A natural dam separates the northern part of the sea from the open waters to the south. The dam has been continually reinforced by new material delivered by a river delta. What used to be a freshwater lake on that basin has dried and become the Imperial Valley, an area of rich soil on the north slope.
