Any renewable energy source requires some sort of backup power. Consider solar or wind turbines, when the sun stops shining or the wind stops blowing electricity will stop flowing causing disruption down the line. With a energy storage facility huge batteries can be charged and when the energy stops flowing due to the sun setting or wind dying down people can still get electricity. When the sun comes back up or the wind blows again the batteries get recharged while also supplying energy to consumers.
