Many crops grown for food can be used growing very little energy, mainly those grown for their oils like sunflowers or soybeans. Other crops can be grown for far less energy, such as coconuts and Castor plants which can be used as biofuels.
Food crops like onions, turnips, chaya and cassava all grow well with little water and in dry conditions. On the other hand, be wary of sweet potatoes, white yam, watermelon, cauliflower, and maize as they often require lots of water in order to grow healthfully. It should be noted though that some varieties of the latter actually do OK in drier conditions (some cauliflower crops require less water than others).
