There are currently numerous ways to run a farm more sustainably. Farmers are prohibitng the overgrazing of cattle, avoiding tilling after planting season, limiting fertilizer run off into nearby lakes and streams, and practicing rotational grazing.
However, one of the greenest farms out there is a dairy run by Albert Strauss in Southern California. The farmer has actually developed a method to use methane as a fuel, and powers most of his farm, cars, and a 16-wheel tractor trailer with it. Using ponds covered with tarps, he is able to power an electric generator with the methane “produced” by his cows, and can literally feed them from a truck they have powered themselves.
