The greenest thing a person could buy would be a clean energy device such as a solar panel or windmill. With that device the person could begin to significantly diminish his or her carbon footprint.
I would say, personally, that your vehicle and food purchases are very important when deciding what to buy “green.” Transportation and the creation of food are two of the most harmful activities to the planet, and by choosing products that incorporate environmental externalities, you can greatly reduce your effect.
For transporation, for example: ride your bike more, walk, take public transportation, coordinate your trips, carpool, or simply do not go where you wanted.
For food: Eat local products, shop at the farmers market, eat seasonally, choose organic and vegetarian options, reduce your trips to restaurants, garden, etc.
