America’s greenest prison is Coyote Ridge Correction Center in Connell, WA. It is a medium security prison and currently holds the LEED award for greenest prison. The prison saves $370,000 a year simply by using natural light instead of artificial!
Another article reports the same $370,000 annual savings over conventional prisons, but attributes the savings to the prison’s use of 5.5 million gallons LESS water than normal. Part of the water saving comes from the prison’s seemingly obvious use of gravel landscape instead of natural grass – the gravel doesn’t require sprinklers!
