I’m sure there are many houses that are completely off the grid throughout the country and the world. I know of one couple who live in Cambridge, MA who are that way. Even with the harsh winters, they grow enough food in the spring, summer, and fall to sustain the two of them. They don’t use any heat, hot water, or electricity and have zero waste (they compost everything that they use). It’s an incredibly sustainable model but they have made many sacrifices of their own comfort to be able to live that way.
