    1. The Ochard Garden in San Francisco is an LEED-certified hotel that also includes nontoxic paints, glues and varnishes, energy efficient lighting, and a recycling program that recycles almost everything you can think of.

Hotels create a variety of wasteful situations from excessive water use from laundry and bathroom facilities to wasted mini soaps constantly re-supplied in rooms. There are, however, some fantastic hotels in the US which are paving the way for more sustainable and environmentally friendly in their industry. As the answer previous to mine stated, LEED certified hotels are currently the gold standard as far as Green hotels. One specifically is the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa. Since their inception, they have received the following awards:

    • Inaugural IMEX- Green Supplier Award
    • Strategy Magazine- Cause & Action Award
    • CNBC European Business- Top 100 (and only hotel group listed) Low-Carbon Pioneer
    • Strategy Magazine- Top Eco Hospitality Program, 2007
    • Association of Travel Marketing Executives- Green Innovation Award
    • Sonoma Economic Development Partnership; Sonoma Valley Green Business
    • State Legislature; Certificate in Recognition of Green Initiatives
