Ford is currently designing a smaller 3-cylinder version of its EcoBoost engine, which should be ready in about 3 years. The engine has been in the design phase for about 20 years, but wasn’t able to generate enough horsepower until it was mated with the EcoBoost technology. The resulting car should be lighter and is expected to emit 100 gallons per kilometer fewer of carbon dioxide, while simultaneously have the same power as a 4-cylinder engine. The car is expected to be sold first in countries like India, but the engine may find itself in American cars soon after that.
