What is green roof greenwash?

A green roof is when, instead of traditional tiles or other roofing materials, you have a roof covered with plants. A green roof consists of a waterproof membrane, a growing medium, and a layer of foliage, all of which combine to create a rooftop garden of sorts, which are often used in urban areas to mitigate CO2 buildup, filter rainwater, and for a variety of other uses. You can find out more about the concept at greenroofs.com.

However, greenwashing is when a major company attempts to paint itself as more eco-friendly than they really are. Green roof greenwashing would be when a company uses ideas like geen roofs, which are relatively simply to implement, in an attempt to pretend they are changing their image towards the environment. And it’s not the only method companies use. You can check out the EnviroMedia Greenwashing Index for more information.
