The GEI is designed to help governments make their economies more green. This will be done by reshaping and refocusing policies, investments, and spending towards various sectors (such as clean technologies, renewable energies, water services, green transportation, waste management, green buildings, and sustainable agriculture and forests). The process involves redesigning infrastructure in order to optimize returns on natural, human, and economic capital investments, while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions, extracting (and using) less natural resources, creating less waste, and reducing social disparities.
