What grades of coal are there?

Coal grades are determined differently based on the type of coal. Coking coal, which is coal that can produce coke (a high carbon residue on some types of coal) is graded based on ash content and ranges from grade I. to IV. with ash content being the least in grade I. Semi coking coal is based on ash and moisture content and only has grade I. and II. And non-coking coal is graded based on the useful heat value and ranges from grade A to G with A being the highest useful heat value.
