It can depend upon a number of factors; distance, terrain, road conditions, load and quality of parking. With different conditions the solution might range a one-speed roadster, to a mountain bike, to a high-end road bike.

I would suggest what is called a hybrid bike. It is a cross between a road bike (for distance) and a mountain bike (for rough terrain). It is built for comfort and durability and makes for an excellent commuting bike. Most major bike companies offer hybrid models.
