A good normal healthy resting heart rate for an adult ranges from 60 to 100 beats a minute. For a well-trained athlete, a normal resting heart rate may be closer to 40 beats a minute. For healthy adults, a lower heart rate at rest generally implies more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness. Although a heart rate can be healthy through a wide range, it is best to consult a doctor if your resting heart rate is consistently above 100 beats per minute or below 60 beats per minute.
